October Newsletter

October, from advocacy to impact!

Hello Research Study Participants!

It is the middle of October and we wanted to share more with you about the study and more generally about what we are doing Rutgers University Genetics Coordinating Center (RUGCC) to help educate and fight Breast Cancer.

Advocacy – Mylie Siegel GCMP ’25

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During this time, advocacy groups take special initiative to raise awareness about breast cancer and the benefits of early screening and prevention against it. Many recognize these efforts through the pink ribbons and fundraising events that are advertised. However, the widespread recognition of this tradition has not always been present. While some individuals grew up hearing about breast cancer awareness, others may remember a time where such a devastating disease was not even commonly discussed. So where did Breast Cancer Awareness Month come from? And what led to its success?  continue reading here…

Impact

At RUGCC, we are building momentum. A fast way any of us can make an impact on breast cancer research is to get involved, invite, recruit, and share the vision that one day breast cancer, and other cancers, will be well understood so as to help significantly improve treatments and prevent the disease from progressing.

During the month of October, we have been reaching out to local, regional and national advocacy organizations to attend events or share our research study with their networks. We can’t do it all alone, if you know someone who would be interested, or if there are events going on near you, let us know.

Most of this outreach is virtual, but this month we have already attended an in-person event in Burlington, VT and will attend the Making Strides event in Central New Jersey on October 27th!

In a future newsletter we will share some exciting findings in genetics research to help showcase how those findings could work for a disease like breast cancer.

Your Impact

Thanks to your help, we continue to make strides ramping up our research study. Here are some quick updates:

We encourage you to share this study with others who can make a direct impact and help us reach our goal of 10,000 participants. Remember, anyone who is 18 years or older and lives in the U.S. can join the study, regardless of whether they have had cancer or not.

Thank you for being a part of our research study.  Your participation is invaluable, and we are grateful for your continued support.
